Although to some it may seem completely obvious, there is still much confusion as to what techniques are proven to effect search engine optimization.  Because SEOs have to maintain their secrecy to remain relevant, deciphering what works to optimize your website, can be tricky and elusive.  Here are some things that are proven effective and some that are just plain mythical.
Meta tags are useful in getting lower grade search engines to higher your ranks, although they appear to be of no use on Google, you can use them as a start up to organizing your site.  Page titles are important as they tell the search engine what content your website contains.  Content, obviously must be related to whatever title you assign in order to get your page ranked highly and to maintain a high ranking.  H1 Tag is an important feature so whatever title you give your page make sure that it is found within the H1 tag , but only use one H1 tag per page.  When naming your files, make sure to use your keywords, and hyphen instead of underscoring when you are creating them.

Even if the length of your site appears to be unworthy, make sure to use a site map.  A site map will make it easier for the search engine to find all of the pages for your site.  Make sure to keep your Robots file hidden.  Robots files are simple files that communicate to the search engines where they cannot go on your site, it is for anything sensitive that you don’t want hackers to be able to access.  Always use a 404 error handling page.  If a user or search engine accidentally mistypes a keyword or url they will automatically be driven to this page, it prevents either from snooping around on your site.  Make sure to place your site map navigation on this page as well.  Lastly where necessary, use your ALT tag in the description of your images.

These methods, when employed into your site have been proven to drive up the exposure to your site by ranking you highly on major search engine sites such as Google.  The best way to further yourself in the search and maintain your standing is through trial and error, so try to implement them all for some real success.
